COURSE OUTLINE
1.     Identification: ELL 517 Shakespeare
2.     Description: There will be lectures and seminars about five plays, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Twelfth Night”, “Richard II”, “Hamlet”, and “The Tempest”, which students will get to know well over the course of the semester. Themes to be discussed include: Shakespeare’s style, Tudor ideas of kingship, and contemporary satire.
3.     Level: Postgraduate (MA).
4.     Prerequisite: None
5.     Objectives: By the end of the semester, students will
·         Have gained a good knowledge of “Romeo and Juliet”, “Twelfth Night”, “Richard II”, “Hamlet”, and “The Tempest”.
·         Know much more about Shakespeare’s life and times.
·         Be able to recognize and discuss key themes like “kingship” and “retribution” with reference to Shakespeare.

·         “ “ , Twelfth Night.
·         “ “ , Richard II.
7.     Recommended reading:

The plays may be presented in this order:

“Hamlet” and Jacobean tragedy.
“Hamlet”
“Hamlet”
“Romeo and Juliet” and early Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s sonnets and their context.
“Romeo and Juliet.”
“Twelfth Night” and satire.
“Twelfth Night”
“Richard II”
“Richard II”
Tudor propaganda in the history plays.
“The Tempest” and drowning Prospero’s book.
“The Tempest”
Shakespeare’s style.
Review.

13.Assessment
a.   Exam period: 1 Final paper. There will also be a mid-term paper, but this is treated as a mock exam, and the evaluation will be on the basis of the final paper.
b.   Types of evaluation:
Written research paper (about 15 pages).
